Pungent and correct with very flattering rose petals and real concentration and nerve. Very good! 13,5 % Vol.

Umathum Ried Hallebühl 2004
Drink 2008 - 2012
Proff that Austria's reds are catchin up with the whites. Mainly Zweigelt grapes. Polished and super-smooth. Very winning. What a treat to be offered this at such a mature stage. 13 % Vol.

Austria Highlights

Wine Spectator Jan/Feb 2008

The articlulate and friendly Josef Umathum oversees one of Austria's best red wine estates. Umathum, located in the northern Burgenland, is going biodynamic and has recently renovated a vineyard site dating to the 13th century. This is the Joiser Kirschgarten, and Umathum is making a top-flight Blaufränkisch from it-rich, ripe and full of dark red cherry and spice flavors. Umathum is also planting the Hungarian white variety Furmint at the site; it will be interesting to see what the future holds for this project.

Josef Umathum is one of Austria's best known red wine makers. Austrian varieties St. Laurent, Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch are the specialities here. Remarkably, the terraced vineyards in the village of Jois that Umathum cultivates date back to 1214.
