Umathum Winery
Umathum is best known for its authentic red wines, while the winery also produces some intriguing white wines. We have revived the ancient Pannonian white Lindenblättriger grape variety in Burgenland, and we cultivate the rare varieties of Gelber Traminer and Pinot gris as well.
On both banks of Lake Neusiedl, a wide range of different soils include slate, lime, clay, and gravel. Healthy soils and lively plant life inspire us and guide us on how to proberly care for them. Plants have memory, and to maintain genetic lines, we select our vines from ancient vineyards.
The Austrian red wine varieties of Zweigelt, St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch make up about 85% of 75 acres under Umathum cultivation. The most important of our vineyards are Ried Hallebühl, Vom Stein, Haideboden, and Kirschgarten, the latter site made up of the only cultivated stone terrace found in Burgenland.

Umathum vineyards operate under the well-defined guidelines of organic agriculture, following the principles of early-20th-century Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner. The toal is to deliver healthy mature grapes to the cellar, and thus we only hand pick our grapes. We undertake cellaring with great care, and for the most part develop the wines in wooden barrels.
Only after more than three years of maturation do we offer our high-quality wines for sale.
We have also established a unique support program toward the development of young talents in the agricultural sector and to provide them a helping hand in getting started. At one time unknown, vegetable farmer Erich Stekovics, vintner Uwe Schiefer, and others who have received this backing have gone on to become big names today in their fields.
