The Land

The Northern Burgenland landscape is shaped by a vast body of water called Lake Neusiedl, whose 122 square miles are shared between Austria and Hungary. With its diverse flora and fauna and massive reed belts, Central Europe’s biggest steppe lake within this much yaster Pannonian Basin is a delightful surprise to visitors.

Just off the eastern shore, Lake Neusiedl National Park is home to plentiful rare bird species. Both environmental scientists and nature lovers travel yearly here – where the hilly northern section of the lake gives way to the southeastern so-called Seewinkel (Lake Corner) plains – to record the impressive spectrum of wildlife in its original undisturbed habitat.

First documented in 1342, the town of Frauenkirchen lies roughly in the Seewinkel center, not far from the eastern shore of the lake. About 40 miles (65 km) away from the Austrian capital Vienna, the town is reached in an hour’s drive.
