Haideboden
Haideboden is the description of roughly defined stretch of land around the pilgrimage town of Frauenkirchen.
Boden means earth, and here the land is made up of light, sandy black soil with Danubian alluvial gravel as a subsoil. On the gently rising land, the sparse gravel reaches the surface and provides exceptionally good conditions for vine cultivation. The grapes grow slowly due to the limited availability of water. They ripen well, and in winter cold air streams protect them from frost damage.
The Umathum winery has used the trademark protected designation Haideboden since 1991 for its red Cuvée, and has over the years developed the concept of “Haideboden origin” wines that represent high value reds from the Burgenland.
In the meantime, the attractive name Haideboden has been used by many vintners in the region for wines of differing styles.
In the future, we need to clarify the boundaries of the area, and further define the wine style in a way that gives consumers a clearer idea, and thus strengthen the Haideboden brand.
Suitability grape varieties for the Haideboden area:
Zweigelt in iron-rich, not too chalky or dry gravel soils.
Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc on harsh gravel sites.
Blaufränkisch where clay occurs in the subsoil.
Sankt Laurent in chalk-rich, well-ventilated gravel soils.

Deep ruby red, in the nose initially raspberries followed by deep impressions of cherries and cassis, mineral hints of graphite.
On the palate fine and spicy, dances on the tongue with impressions of dark berries backed up with fine acidity. Due to the difficult growing season in 2013 Haideobden contains all Zweigelt grapes from Hallebühl vineyard which adds additional complexity to the wine.A typical Austrian blend (Zweigelt 55 %, Blaufränkisch 25 %, Cabernet Sauvignon 20 %), marked by indigenous varieties with fine nuances of Cabernet.
